"I pursue happiness. And the mountain responds to my search."
Chantal Maudit
The world of high mountains can seem intimidating for beginners, but there are ideal routes for those who want to get started in this exciting activity.
Here are some of the best options to start your adventure in the high mountains. The best way to do it is with an experienced guide, contact local guides or those who know the area.
- Trekking to Everest Base Camp (Nepal)
The Everest Base Camp Trek is an excellent introduction to high mountains. With a maximum altitude of 5,364 metres, this trek offers stunning views of the Himalayas without requiring advanced technical skills. The route begins in Lukla and passes through picturesque Sherpa villages, Buddhist monasteries and Sagarmatha National Park. Acclimatization is key, so it is recommended to take the trek in a span of 12 to 14 days.
- Tour of Mont Blanc (France, Italy, Switzerland)
The Tour du Mont Blanc is a circular route of approximately 170 kilometres that crosses three countries: France, Italy and Switzerland. Although the maximum altitude is 2,584 metres, the variety of landscapes and the quality of the huts make this trek an ideal choice for beginners. The route can be completed in 10 to 12 days, and offers the opportunity to enjoy Alpine culture at its best.
- Salkantay Trek (Peru)
The Salkantay Trek is a less-crowded alternative to the famous Inca Trail, but no less spectacular. Reaching an altitude of 4,630 meters at the Salkantay Pass, this five-day route offers stunning views of snow-capped mountains and rainforests. Plus, it ends at the iconic citadel of Machu Picchu, providing an unrivaled cultural and natural experience.
- Mount Toubkal (Morocco)
Mount Toubkal, at 4,167 metres, is the highest mountain in North Africa. The Toubkal trek is an excellent choice for beginners looking for a high-altitude experience outside the Himalayas or Andes. The most popular route is a two-day climb from Imlil, passing through rocky landscapes and green valleys. The summit offers spectacular views of the Atlas and the Sahara.
- Annapurna Base Camp (Nepal)
Another must-do trek in Nepal is the one to Annapurna Base Camp. With a maximum altitude of 4,130 meters, this 7- to 10-day trek offers a privileged view of the Annapurna mountain range. The route is less demanding than Everest and passes through rice fields, rhododendron forests and traditional villages, offering a rich cultural experience.
We recommend this spectacular trek: THE TREKKING OF THE 3 PEAKS OF LAVAREDO AND CRODA ROSSA in the Dolomites.
